Flea prevention is vital for your pet’s health. The battle against fleas is a ferocious one that must be waged on multiple fronts. First and foremost, you must treat your dogs to keep fleas and ticks at bay. In this blog, we’ll show you how to get rid of fleas quickly utilizing a variety of tried-and-true approaches and strategies.
Fleas on Your Dog – How to Get Rid of Them
Your pet isn’t the only one who adores you: fleas do, too! How do you choose the best flea treatment and prevention when there are so many options? The best flea treatment for your pet may be determined by your lifestyle, where you reside, and even your pet’s age.
What’s the difference between permethrin and pyrethrin in flea and tick shampoos?
These two insecticides appear to be very similar on the surface. Insects and mosquitoes are both killed by them. They may sound similar and share some characteristics, but their chemical composition and origin are distinct.
Permethrin is a man-made synthetic substance. Pyrethrum comes from the chrysanthemum plant and is completely natural. Pyrethrin-containing products are generally safe for dogs and cats. Insecticides containing permethrin must not be used on cats.
Dips and Shampoos:
Flea and tick shampoos are a good way to “start” the season, especially if you’re going to use a collar, a topical, or an oral treatment afterward. The active ingredient pyrethrin is found in both the Gold Medal Flea and Tick Shampoo and the Bio-Groom Flea and Tick Shampoo. This makes them suitable for dogs and cats. Because Sentry Flea and Tick Shampoo contain Permethrins, it should not be used on cats. Choose Vets Best Anti-Flea Spray Shampoo for a more natural method to flea prevention. It is blended with peppermint and clove oils.
Flea dips with aloe vera extract, lanolin, and sunscreen can control fleas for up to 28 days. Adams Plus Pyrethrin Dip, and Martin’s FLEE Flea, Tick, and Mange Dip are examples.
Flea Collars:
They’ve come a long way, baby, when it comes to flea and tick collars. A new generation is saying goodbye to the dusty, oily, stinky, and, quite frankly, ineffectual collars of the past. Here are a few excellent options:
The Seresto flea and tick collar use a unique mix of Imidacloprid and Flumethrin to provide eight months of protection. The active substances are infused into the collar and released slowly over time in low concentrations. Although the Seresto collar is waterproof and unaffected by bathing or swimming, Bayer advises against removing it because it may disturb its operation and the continuous release of chemicals.
The active ingredient in UltraShield and Salvo flea and tick collars is Deltamethrin, and both offer six months of protection per collar. Salvo is available in a two-pack for a year’s worth of protection. The Natural Essential Oil Pest Repellent Collar for Dogs is made with essential oils including Citronella, Peppermint, Geranium, and Orange, making it a natural alternative to chemical-based collars.
Sprays, wipes, and Spot-ons are all options:
Drops or spot-ons, sprays, and wipes are all examples of topical flea treatments. Apply spot-ons to your dog’s skin by parting his hair and applying the liquid directly to his skin. To be effective, the product must be administered to the skin rather than the hair. Apply to many locations down your pet’s back for optimal effects (always follow label directions). If your cat is particularly agile and flexible, apply the topical near the base of the skull rather than along the back. The substance will be absorbed into the skin if you do not rub it in.
Imidacloprid is the active element in Advantage II, while Pyriproxyfen is the IGR (insect growth regulator). Fipronil is the active ingredient in Frontline Plus, and (S)-methoprene is the IGR. There are currently various “generics” of Frontline Plus and Advantage II on the market, as well as Permethrin-based topicals.
Vet’s Best has a topical with clove, thyme, and cinnamon oils as active components for a more natural approach. Sprays including Advantage Treatment Spray, ShieldTec Flea and Tick Spray, and Espree Flea and Tick Spray round out this group. Although branded as a poultry spray, Davis Pure Planet has a spray that is safe for dogs, cats, and puppies and efficient against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes! Espree and Vet’s Best both make simple flea and tick wipes that are safe for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens over the age of 12 weeks for those on the road.
Treatments that can be taken orally and that can be chewed:
Oral flea treatments like Advantus Soft Chews or Capstar are designed to eliminate fleas rapidly and last for 24 hours. These can be used on a regular basis, although they’re usually reserved for a fast “knockdown” that’s followed with a collar or topical.
NexGard, Bravecto, Simparica, and Trifexis are just a few of the prescription-only monthly oral flea treatments. Jeffers does not sell prescription medications and suggests speaking with your veterinarian.

Tough as nails:
The SpectraShield Medallion, which fits onto your dog’s standard collar, is another sort of protection. They’ll be flea and tick-free for up to four months after that. The active components in the medallion, zeta-cypermethrin, and piperonyl butoxide, remain effective even after bathing and swimming. This could be the ideal answer for your dog who enjoys being outside!
Here at Charolette Kennels, we need to make sure all furry friends visiting us are flea-free, so everyone can be safe and itch-free.
